'Vilakku' from the Temple and Home
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

'Vilakku' means lamp in Malayalam and I just didnt think translating it to English wud do justice to the word :-) May be 'Dia' (in Hindi) will be a better translation.

The 1st pic is of the 'Chuttuvilakku', 'Vilakku' around the temple (or 'Ayyappan Kaavu' as its called there), near my home town, Eranhikkal in Kozhikode. The pic comes with f/10 and 0.6s exposure, using a tripod and focus on the leftmost 'Vilakku'.

In hindsight, I feel that a wider shutter and a correspondingly shorter exposure wud've been better for the 2nd pic. The problem is that, in the current pic, the people arnd it is also visible and not much blurred. Also the flame is a little messy, since the wind kept blowing it around. A lower, exposure time shud have solved these problems. Finally, I had to crop the pic to eliminate the distractions. I also have a pic with f/32 and 30s, taken from a little wider angle, where all the flames have transformed to bright red stars! But, that was way too unrealistic and not really what I wanted.

The 3rd pic is from home and is a little over exposed at the bottom and under exposed at the top @ f/4 and 15s. No complaints, since I liked the flare caused by the flame at the bottom :-)

One more Bengaluru evening
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

The first pic is near the Golf Course, just after the High Grounds Police station. This is a region with heavy traffic and soothing tree cover ... but the traffic looks, just a blur @ 6 sec and f/6.3.

Second pic is the line of cars and lights in front of Windsor Manor hotel. 10 sec exposure and f/18.

Last pic is a Bajji/Cutlet stall near my house @ Ganga Nagar. Had been seeing this almost everyday during my return from office and I finally made an attempt at taking it. In the full size pic, the journey of the batter from the container to the frying pan is kinda visible :-) Unfortunately it didnt survive the resize :( This pic was 4.5 seconds and f/8.

Traffic @ MG Road Brigade Junction, Bengaluru
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

Given a chance, I would have planted my tripod somewhere in the divider and set a long exposure with narrow shutter, trying to capture the entire gridlock of vehicles.

Adarsh says ... 'U r never caught in a traffic jam ... u r part of one!' I was part of one and had the clutch half pressed, with amma and achan sitting behind! Right @ the center of the city, junction of Brigade and MG Road, entering Kamaraj Road on a saturday evening!

Only thing I could manage was a hand held shot, with the camera outside the window and held high @ f/4 and 1/4 seconds!

Fruit Cart @ Ganga Nagar
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

This is the only photo session I had for almost a week now. So, I am putting it here, in spite of the results not being very encouraging.

In the second pic, the light effect is caused by a two wheeler coming down from the road, right in time! I also added Sepia effect to that pic. For completion sake, the 1st pic is @ f/4.5 and 1/2 s and the 2nd one is @ f/32 and 4.5 seconds.

Diwali night @ Brigade Road, Bengaluru
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

These pictures are the usual ... with tripod, long exposure ... thin shutter pics, first one is f/22 and 20 seconds, with ISO 100. Third one is very similar, with 10 second exposure.

For the 2nd pic, I wanted to capture the movement of people ateast vaguely and at the same time, keep the DOF long enough to cover the whole scene, as well as make the lights look like stars. Finally, had to resort to ISO 400, since that was the only way I cud've taken an f/22 and 1.3 seconds.

Night Photography Revisited ...
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

Yet another effort to capture the ghost trails ... this time in inner ring road, Bengaluru:

Atleast this time I realized that, rather than using a very low 'f' value like f/32 to ensure better focus, it may be better to use something like f/6.3 and get clean red lines in a shorter time (about 10seconds). When the exposure was abt 2minutes, as I did last time, the trails get smudged and dirty. This time, with a lower exposure time, it was cleaner and clearer thick lines. Guess ... I need more experiments .. sigh!!!

I have had a pic before, trying to do the same. I guess, a stronger light (full headlight minus high beam), less bumpy road and a better camera/lens, had made the beam kinda straight. I used f/8 for this pic, about 12-13 seconds to expose the Versa staying still and a total of 18 seconds, including the motion capture. Earlier, I had tried f/6.3 and the beam looked a bit too strong.

Ghost Trails ...
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

I had attempted to take the ghost trails of vehicles numerous times ... and has not got it to my satisfaction till date.

Here is the results of one more experiment ... this time from the top of Airport Road flyover, Bengaluru. The first pic is the view towards the Airport from the top of the flyover with a 30 second exposure @ f/32. There was a lamp post, coming right in the middle of the pic and spoiling it ... so I had to crop it :-(

The second one is from the ramp while coming from inner ring road and looking towards Indiranagar. f/32 again with a 154 seconds exposure. What I liked in this pic is the light coming from the lamp post with that elongated spokes looking like stars. The ghost trails itself is a little over exposed and could have been better off from somewhere a little higher and away from those high beams. I did try to cover up the lens whenever a high beam shows up in the horizon but there were too many of them to effectively do this!

Night Shooting near Halasuru Lake...
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

These pics are taken when Adarsh and I decided on a weekend evening to take a look at the Halasuru (Ulsoor) Lake. The first pic comes from near the Park, looking at the street light reflections (f/8 and 30second exposure) and the second one is the reflection of the Philips building onto the lake (f/4, 3.2seconds).

Tripod and Night Photography
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

I finally got my tripod and this opened up a lot of avenues ... especially late night and longer exposure photography. While in big cities of the western world, I have tried to photograph the skyline, but mostly ended up with shaky photographs. A tripod is capable of changing all that. This pic was taken from the top of Ebony Restaurant, 13th floor of Barton center in Bengaluru with f/5.6 and 15second exposure. The red line towards the center left is the ghost trail of vehicles passing through MG Road.

The Full Moon Glory
Category: Lights 'n Shadows

Finally, this is my first full moon shot without overexposing the moon. This pic is taken with 1/800 second exposre. With a longer lens and a better camera, it may have been possible to really get the details of the moon's phase. But thats for later!

Btw ... this one moon had gone into many of my other pics which otherwise looked incomplete without a moon in the sky :-) One example is this pic of Sears Towers, Chicago, which had some empty portions in it. So ... I opened up both these pics in GIMP, changed the background color in the moon pic to match the other and placed it into this empty region!
