Making of a Profile Pic _Hide
Category: People 'n Portraits

We were confined to Bengaluru for the past couple of months and was thrilled when Preethu's cousins and family visited us. We had a good time at home and I had a good time capturing the good times :)

Vidhya is not the camera shy type, but, I still wanted a natural shot. There were people all over the living room and I had the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L (macro) lens on, along with a Vivitar 285HV strobe on-camera. The entire, thing was mounted on a Manfrotto 728B for stability and I was clicking randomly. In between, Vidhya felt that I was taking her photos, but all of us managed to convince her that I was pointing at Preethu's Achan seated next to her!

Next few minutes she hardly noticed the flash firing. Here is one of the expressions I liked most. The shot is in manual mode, ISO-200, f/5 and 1/15s exposure, with the flash bouncing from the ceiling.

Next day, we had an actual photo shoot :) I had my usual white curtains and bed sheets spread out to provide the clean white background. With a little bit of over-exposure, the background almost disappeared. It took a little time for her to get used to the attention of people all around her, but she finally did!

This pic is again with the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L (macro) lens, mounted on a Manfrotto 728B and assisted by the Vivitar 285HV strobe. I also had couple of flourascent lambs giving me some useful extra light. Since, the Vivitar 285HV does not support through the lens metering and I required over-exposure, manual mode was chosen with ISO-400, f/4.5 and 1/8s. Finally, I guess Vidhya was happy with the shot, since she was using it for her orkut profile pic :)

Wonderful shot! Do you have a stand that holds the curtain or do you just hang it off the window and spread the white bedsheet below? I have never tried it before, but really want to try. I dont have a strobe, been buying too much so holding off on that. One choice is Canon 430ex, but can u suggest a cheaper alternative?

Vidhya is a beautiful girl and that first image has a stunning natural look. She will surely excel as a model, maybe she should consider it as a career option when she's up to it.

Thejesh: Why wud I be offended? I'd only be happy to shoot ur pics :)

Dinesh: I used the curtains spread on the ground along with the bed sheat and used the white wall for the rest. For some earlier shots I've used some plastic rope to keep it in place. U dont need anything fancy, just the basic things will do :) About the strobe, I'd been using a Vivitar 285HV which is probably the cheapest option. One problem here is that the metering will have to be manual (with trial and error). With canon speedlights (430 or 580 or others) u get E-TTL and proper metering. But I am not sure how good the E-TTL is with off-camera and bounced light.

Robert: Thnx a lot

Thomas: I did pass the message and ur comment to her :)

Rahul: I agree its the natural one of the too :)

Mohkum: Yes, the 2nd one was staged as I mentioned in the post :)
